What is Pinhole Photography?
Pinhole photography is an alternative process where light enters a small, hole-sized opening in a camera, projecting an image onto film or a digital sensor without the use of a traditional lens. The soft, ethereal images created by this process have a charm that’s entirely unique, blending science with artistry.
This alternative method strips away the complexities of modern-day cameras and emphasizes creativity, exploration, and the sheer joy of making something by hand. From its historical significance to its growing popularity among modern photographers, pinhole photography bridges the gap between the old and the new.
For digital photographers, this process takes on a modern twist by repurposing everyday cameras into pinhole cameras. It’s eco-friendly, creative, and offers endless opportunities to experiment with light and composition.

How to Make Your Own Digital Pinhole Camera
Creating a digital pinhole camera may sound complicated, but it’s surprisingly simple and a lot of fun. Best of all, you likely already have most of the materials you’ll need at home!
Materials Needed
A digital camera or smartphone
Aluminum foil or black electrical tape
A sewing needle or pin
Scissors
Patience and a creative spirit
Step 1: Watch Our YouTube Tutorial
Before you begin, check out our easy step-by-step guide on YouTube here: How to Make a Digital Pinhole Camera. It’s quick, clear, and designed to help you create your first pinhole adapter in no time.
Step 2: Make the Pinhole
Cut a small square of aluminum foil (or electrical tape) and carefully pierce the center with a sewing needle or pin. Keep the hole as small and clean as possible.
Step 3: Attach the Pinhole to Your Camera
Secure your pinhole material over your camera’s lens using tape. Ensure the pinhole is centered over the lens opening. If you’re using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, you can tape the pinhole material onto the camera’s lens cap, leaving only the tiny hole exposed.
Step 4: Experiment and Adjust
Take test shots and adjust your settings as needed. Pinhole cameras often require long exposure times due to reduced light coming through the small hole. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Step 5: Upload Your Creations to Pinterest.org
After your masterpiece is ready, join the global community by sharing it. Visit pinholeday.org, where anyone can upload their pinhole photographs until June 30, 2025, to become part of the worldwide gallery.
