Alternative Processes FAQ
What are alternative processes?
Alternative processes in photography refer to unique or non-traditional methods of creating images or prints. These can include innovative ways of capturing an image, such as using a pinhole camera or camera obscura, as well as traditional printing methods like cyanotypes, salt prints, Van Dyke brown prints, or photo lifts and transfers. These methods often highlight the artistic side of photography and allow for more experimental and creative outcomes.
What is the easiest alternative process to start with?
Cyanotypes are one of the easiest and most popular alternative processes for beginners. They use a simple chemical process and require minimal equipment. Plus, the striking blue tones of a cyanotype print make it visually stunning and satisfying to create, even for those just starting out.
They are easy enough that I have taught the process to children. You can even buy the papers with the chemicals already embedded in them to make the process even easier. You can find some of the needed items in my Amazon store.
Do I need special products to do alternative processes?
Yes, most alternative processes require specific materials or chemicals not commonly used in digital or traditional film photography. For example, cyanotypes need light-sensitive chemicals and watercolor paper, while salt prints require a salt solution and photographic paper. However, many of these materials are affordable and easy to source online or through specialty art supply stores.

Are there places to find more information on alternative processes?
While every process has its charm, cyanotypes stand out for their striking simplicity and versatility. From botanical prints to abstract compositions, this timeless process offers endless opportunities for creative expression. Plus, the deep blue tones add a classic, artistic touch to any project. I also have a real love for wax encaustics and how they can create a dreamy look on a final print.
